About Saint-Jean-de-Monts
Saint-Jean-de-Monts is the capital of this coast: eight kilometres of fine sand backed by dunes and pine forest, and a town of around 8,500 residents that works all year rather than shutting down in September.
Everything is here. Supermarkets, schools, a hospital and medical centre, a cinema, a covered market, restaurants and bars, and an esplanade along the front. The eighteen-hole golf course runs through the pines beside the sea, there is a thalassotherapy spa, a sailing and sand-yachting school on the beach, a casino, and a long seafront promenade for walking and cycling. The coastal cycle route, part of the Vélodyssée running the length of the Atlantic coast, passes right through.
North of the town the beaches continue unbroken to Notre-Dame-de-Monts and Fromentine, where the boats leave for the Île d'Yeu. South, the Corniche Vendéenne and the fishing port of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie are twenty minutes away. Inland lie the marshes of the Marais Breton, one of the great bird landscapes of western France.
Challans is twenty minutes for the market; La Roche-sur-Yon, the departmental capital, around fifty. Nantes and its international airport are a little over an hour, and Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie has a railway station with connections to Nantes and Paris.
