About Pontivy
Pontivy is the capital of central Brittany and the most useful town in the interior of the Morbihan. For anyone moving to France permanently rather than for the summer, that word — useful — is the one that matters.
It has a hospital, doctors and specialists, several supermarkets, an old high street with independent shops, a large Monday market that fills the squares, cinemas, a swimming pool, sports clubs, primary schools, colleges and lycées, and a population of around fourteen thousand that keeps all of it open in February.
It is also a genuinely interesting town to live in. The medieval quarter climbs to the Rohan château, built in the fifteenth century and still standing over the river. Beside it lies something quite different: the grid of straight streets, stone façades and formal squares that Napoleon laid out when he made Pontivy a garrison town at the centre of his Breton road network and renamed it Napoléonville.
The Blavet runs through, canalised and joined to the Nantes–Brest canal, and the towpath heading south past Saint-Nicolas-des-Eaux is among the best walking and cycling in Brittany.
Lorient and the south coast are fifty minutes, Vannes an hour, Saint-Brieuc and the north coast about the same, and Rennes an hour and a quarter.
