About Rohan
Rohan is a small town on the Nantes–Brest canal in central Morbihan, and it gave its name to one of the great families of French history — the Rohans, whose château stands downstream at Josselin and whose motto ran Roi ne puis, prince ne daigne, Rohan suis: king I cannot be, prince I do not deign to be, Rohan I am.
The canal is the heart of the place. The Oust was canalised through here in the nineteenth century, and the town has a lock, a quay and a towpath that runs for miles in both directions — flat, traffic-free walking and cycling through locks, woods and water meadows, and boats to hire for a week without a licence.
For a family, the practical point is that Rohan has schools and colleges of its own, along with shops, a bakery, a chemist and a doctor. That is unusual for a town of this size in rural Brittany and it is the reason this plot is worth more than its neighbours on paper.
Pontivy is fifteen minutes west for the hospital, the big supermarkets and the lycées; Loudéac about twenty north; Josselin twenty-five south-east. Vannes and the Gulf are an hour, Rennes about an hour and a quarter, and the north and south coasts both roughly an hour away — the advantage of sitting in the middle of Brittany.
