About Saint-Caradec-Trégomel
This is a very small commune — a few hundred people — in the north-west of the Morbihan, in the Pays du Roi Morvan, the inland country named after the ninth-century Breton king. It sits in the triangle between Le Faouët, Guémené-sur-Scorff and Plouay, in a landscape of wooded valleys, granite outcrops and hedged fields.
Anyone choosing here is choosing quiet, and should know it: this is a hamlet-and-lane commune, not a place with its own supermarket. What it has instead is space, silence, dark skies and prices that reflect none of the scarcity you find an hour south.
The practical towns are close enough. Le Faouët, about fifteen minutes, has shops, a chemist, a doctor and that extraordinary sixteenth-century covered market hall, with the chapels of Sainte-Barbe and Saint-Fiacre just outside the town. Guémené-sur-Scorff, about the same distance the other way, has a weekly market and is famous across France for its andouille. Plouay is twenty-five minutes, and Lorient, its airport and the coast are around forty-five.
The Scorff and the Ellé rivers run down through this country to the sea, and the walking and fishing along them is some of the best in Brittany.
