About Saint-Gonnery
Saint-Gonnery sits just north of Pontivy in central Morbihan, in the country above the Blavet valley. It is a village of around a thousand people that has held on to its everyday services, and it is close enough to town that the practical side of life is easy while the setting stays entirely rural.
Pontivy is ten minutes away and is the reason this part of Brittany works for people who are actually going to live here rather than visit. Hospital, doctors and specialists, supermarkets, a proper high street, a Monday market that fills the squares, cinemas, swimming pool, schools, colleges and lycées. The town itself is worth knowing: a medieval quarter climbing to the Rohan château, and beside it the straight streets and formal squares Napoleon laid out when he made it a garrison town.
South of Pontivy the Blavet runs canalised through one of the loveliest valleys in Brittany, past Saint-Nicolas-des-Eaux and the chapel of Saint-Gildas built against its rock. The towpath runs all the way to the sea at Hennebont.
Lorient and the south coast are around fifty minutes, the north coast about the same, Vannes an hour, Rennes an hour and a quarter.
