About Renac

Renac is a small commune in the south of the Ille-et-Vilaine, on the high ground above the Vilaine between Redon and Langon. It is farming country — small fields, hedgerows, quiet lanes and scattered hamlets — with the marshes of the Vilaine below.

Those marshes are the local treasure. The Marais de Gannedel, a short drive away, is one of the largest and best-preserved wetlands in Brittany: several hundred hectares of reed, open water and wet meadow, flooded in winter and grazed in summer, with a visitor centre, boardwalks and hides. Harriers, herons, bitterns and thousands of migrating birds use it, and the light over the water on a still morning is worth getting up for.

Redon is ten minutes south, and it is the reason this location works: a town of around 9,500 with supermarkets, a hospital, doctors, primary schools and several lycées, a cinema, a swimming pool, a weekly market and genuine year-round employment.

The station in Redon runs a direct TGV to Paris Montparnasse in about two and a quarter hours, with Rennes and Nantes each around forty minutes by train and Vannes half an hour. Both Rennes and Nantes have international airports within an hour by road. The Atlantic beaches are around forty-five minutes and the Gulf of Morbihan under an hour.
