About Pluméliau-Bieuzy
This is, for our money, the prettiest setting on the Morbihan list. Bieuzy is an old village above the Blavet in the most beautiful stretch of that river's valley, and the commune merged with neighbouring Pluméliau in 2019.
A few minutes down the hill is Saint-Nicolas-des-Eaux, where the Blavet makes a great slow loop beneath wooded cliffs. There are thatched cottages along the water, a port for the canal boats, canoes and paddleboards to hire in summer, and walking paths climbing up to the Site de Castennec, a Gallo-Roman and medieval hilltop with one of the finest views in inland Brittany. On the far bank the chapel of Saint-Gildas is built directly against the rock face, with a spring running beneath it. People drive across Brittany to see this; it would be at the end of your road.
For daily life, Pluméliau has shops, a school and a medical centre, and Pontivy is fifteen minutes north for the hospital, the supermarkets, the lycées and the Monday market. Baud is ten minutes south.
Lorient and the coast are around forty-five minutes, Vannes and the Gulf of Morbihan about fifty, and Rennes an hour and a half. The Blavet towpath runs from the doorstep to the sea at Hennebont if you have the legs for it.
