About Ploërdut
Ploërdut lies in the north-west of the Morbihan, in the Scorff valley and within the Pays du Roi Morvan. It is a commune of scattered hamlets and granite farmsteads around a village that has kept its everyday services, and it holds one of the strangest and most beautiful sites in inland Brittany.
Just outside the village, at Locuon, there is an ancient quarry cut into the hillside — worked, it is thought, in Gallo-Roman times, the stone taken away to build elsewhere. What is left is a green amphitheatre of rock and water, with a chapel and a sacred fountain beside it, and steps cut into the stone. It is the sort of place you take visitors to and then find yourself going back to alone.
Guémené-sur-Scorff, ten minutes away, is the market town: a Thursday market, shops, a chemist, doctors, a medical centre, and the andouille for which the town is known throughout France. Pontivy is around half an hour east for hospital, supermarkets and secondary schools. Lorient, the airport and the coast are about fifty minutes south, and Quimper roughly an hour west.
This is the quiet, wooded, riverine Brittany — walking, fishing, buzzards over the fields — and it is priced accordingly.
