About Pleudihen-sur-Rance

Pleudihen sits on the western bank of the Rance, in the Côtes-d'Armor, halfway between the sea at Saint-Malo and the medieval town of Dinan. It is a commune of around four thousand with a working centre — bakery, shops, a supermarket, a school, doctors and a market.

This is cider country, and seriously so. The Rance valley here has grown apples for centuries, and Pleudihen has its own Musée de la Pomme et du Cidre in an old farm on the edge of the village, with the presses, the orchards and a tasting at the end. The local cider and the lambig that follows it are part of the culture rather than a tourist attraction.

The river is the other half of it. At Mordreuc, down the hill, there is a small quay, a slipway, a beach at high water and one of the best views on the whole estuary — the Rance opening out below the ruins of the Château du Chêne Vert, with the tide filling and emptying the whole valley. The GR34 runs along the bank, and the old railway is now a greenway.

Dinan, with its ramparts, its medieval streets and its port on the river, is fifteen minutes. Saint-Malo is twenty-five, with the hospital, the walled city, the beaches, the ferry port and the TGV to Paris in under three hours. Dinard and its airport are twenty minutes; Rennes around fifty.
