About the village and the Rance

Le Minihic-sur-Rance sits on the west bank of the estuary between Dinard and Dinan, and the village is the whole appeal: a bakery, shops, a school, a church, a community that is here in February, and the river a few minutes down the lane.

The Rance at this point is wide, sheltered and tidal, with wooded banks and small coves. Garel is one of them — a little river beach where the water is calm and warm at high tide and the boats sit on their moorings. Down the hill at La Landriais, the old boatyard, its dry dock and one of the last tide mills on the estuary still stand, with the GR34 running past them along the bank. Walking or cycling up the valley towards Plouër and Dinan from here is as good as inland Brittany gets.

The Rance barrage a few minutes north was the first tidal power station of its scale in the world and still generates, and crossing it puts you in Saint-Malo.

Dinard is ten minutes: shops, market, restaurants, the belle-époque front, and the airport with UK flights. Saint-Malo is about fifteen minutes, with the hospital, the secondary schools, the walled city, the ferry port to Portsmouth, Poole and Jersey, and the TGV station with Paris in under three hours. Dinan is twenty-five minutes.
