About Lizio
Lizio is one of the prettiest villages in inland Morbihan and it carries the official label to prove it: a Petite Cité de Caractère, a village of character, with granite houses, flowered lanes and old wells clustered around the church.
It is also, improbably, a small centre of the eccentric. L'Univers du Poète Ferrailleur — the world of the scrap-metal poet — is a garden and workshop of enormous moving machines built from salvage by the sculptor Robert Coudray, and it draws visitors from across France. Beside it there is an insectarium. Neither is what you expect to find down a Breton lane, and both mean the village has a life beyond its own population.
For daily needs, Sérent is ten minutes and Malestroit about fifteen — the latter a lovely canal town on the Oust with shops, a market, a medical centre and miles of towpath. Ploërmel is twenty-five minutes for supermarkets, schools and the hospital, and the forest of Brocéliande begins about half an hour north-east.
Vannes and the Gulf of Morbihan are around forty-five minutes, Rennes an hour, and Nantes about an hour and a quarter.
