About Domfront

Domfront — officially Domfront-en-Poiraie — is a medieval town of real distinction, built on a sandstone spur rising 70 metres above the river gorge, and one of the very few towns in the Orne to have kept its full medieval layout. Narrow cobbled streets, covered passageways, half-timbered houses, and inner courtyards cluster beneath the dramatic ruins of the 12th-century castle keep — once one of the most powerful fortresses in France, and a place that saw Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard the Lionheart, and King John. Thirteen of the original rampart towers still stand, and the views over the surrounding bocage from the castle gardens are magnificent.

This is a town that celebrates its heritage: the Médiévales de Domfront, a great medieval festival held every two years, draws more than 25,000 visitors for knights' tournaments, street theatre, and a craftsmen's market beneath the castle walls. The surrounding countryside carries the "Site Remarquable du Goût" distinction for its two famous specialities — poiré (perry) and Calvados du Domfrontais, made from the region's centuries-old pear orchards.

For everyday life, Domfront has shops, schools, restaurants, and services, and the town is a natural stopping point on the old pilgrimage road to Mont-Saint-Michel.
