About Grandparigny

Grandparigny is a commune in the south of the Manche, formed from several neighbouring villages, sitting in the rolling bocage just north of Mortain. This is quiet, working countryside — dairy farms, cider orchards, thick hedgerows and lanes — with the everyday convenience of being a couple of minutes from a town.

Mortain is right there, and it is the most dramatic small town in the department. It stands on a granite shoulder above the valley of the Cance, and the whole place is built around water and rock. The Grande Cascade falls around twenty-five metres through a wooded gorge a short walk from the centre, with the Petite Cascade just downstream. Above them sits the Abbaye Blanche, a twelfth-century Cistercian house with a beautifully preserved cloister, and from the chapel on the ridge you can see as far as Mont-Saint-Michel on a clear day.

The town has supermarkets, a school, doctors, a pharmacy, restaurants and a weekly market. The country around it is excellent for walking, cycling and fishing, with the Sée and Sélune valleys either side and greenways along the old railway lines.

Vire is around twenty-five minutes, Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët about twenty, Avranches and the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel roughly half an hour. Caen and its ferry terminal are about an hour, Saint-Malo an hour and a quarter, and Rennes with its airport and TGV a little over an hour.
