About Le Mesnil-Eury
Le Mesnil-Eury is a small commune in the centre of the Manche, west of Saint-Lô, on the edge of the Parc naturel régional des Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin.
The marshes are one of the great landscapes of northern France: tens of thousands of hectares of wet meadow and slow water that flood in winter and dry into hay and grazing in summer. The birdlife is exceptional — storks, harriers, waders, and enormous numbers of overwintering ducks and geese — and there are hides, boardwalks and a visitor centre a short drive away. In summer they are wide, quiet and full of light.
Around the village itself the country is classic bocage, with hedgerows, small fields and lanes, and the hamlet of Marigny a few minutes off has shops and a school.
Saint-Lô is around fifteen minutes: the departmental capital, with a hospital, supermarkets, secondary schools, a railway station with services to Paris via Caen, a cinema and the national stud farm. Carentan and its marina are about twenty-five minutes, Coutances and its cathedral a similar distance, and the west-coast beaches around half an hour. Utah Beach and the American D-Day sites are roughly forty minutes north, Cherbourg and its ferries around an hour, and Caen about an hour.
