About Hambye
Hambye is a village in the heart of the Manche, in the wooded valley of the Sienne between Coutances and Villedieu-les-Poêles. It is best known for one thing, and it is worth the detour on its own.
The Abbaye de Hambye, founded in the twelfth century, stands roofless in the valley below the village — and it is one of the most beautiful ruined abbeys in France. The abbey church still rises to its full height, the great arches of the crossing open straight to the sky, and the conventual buildings around it survive well enough that you can walk the cloister and the chapter house. It was saved from demolition in the twentieth century and is now owned by the department, with concerts and exhibitions through the summer. On a quiet weekday morning you may well have it to yourself.
The village itself has a bakery, shops, a school and the everyday services that keep a rural commune working, and the Sienne valley around it is fine walking and trout fishing country.
Coutances, with its extraordinary Gothic cathedral, a hospital, supermarkets, secondary schools and a railway station, is around twenty minutes. Villedieu-les-Poêles, the copper and bell-founding town, is a similar distance. The west-coast beaches at Agon-Coutainville and Hauteville are about half an hour, Granville and its port around thirty-five minutes, Mont-Saint-Michel roughly an hour, and Caen and Cherbourg and their ferry terminals about an hour and a quarter.
