About Sarzeau

Sarzeau is the principal town of the Presqu'île de Rhuys, the peninsula that encloses the southern side of the Golfe du Morbihan. It is an unusual place to live because of that geography: the open Atlantic and its long sandy beaches on the southern shore, the sheltered gulf with its islands and its oyster beds on the northern one, and only a few kilometres of land in between.

The town has everything you need day to day — supermarkets, schools, doctors and a pharmacy, a cinema, restaurants and bars, and a market that has been running for centuries and still fills the centre. Out of season it stays a working town rather than emptying out, which is not true of every resort on this coast.

The Château de Suscinio is the landmark. Built as the seaside residence of the Dukes of Brittany, moated, towered and now beautifully restored, it stands almost on the beach a few minutes from the town and looks out over the bay towards the Pointe de Penvins. Around it the coastline runs through beach after beach — Suscinio, Landrezac, Penvins — all joined by the GR34 coastal path.

On the gulf side, the water is sheltered enough for small boats and paddleboards, and more than two hundred bird species use these shores and mudflats through the year. Port du Crouesty at Arzon, at the western end of the peninsula, is one of the biggest marinas in Brittany, and Port-Navalo at the tip faces the gulf's narrow mouth.

Vannes is under half an hour: a walled medieval old town, a working port, the full range of medical services, and a TGV station with Paris in about two and a half hours. Nantes airport is around an hour and a half by road, and Rennes is a similar distance.
