Six hundred metres from La Pège beach — close enough to walk down with a towel and back up for lunch, which is the whole point of a house on this coast. The plot is 386 m², compact and easy to look after, and carries a brand new four-bedroom house at €300,435 all in.
The house is our four-bedroom design with two bathrooms, over two floors with a garage, which is what makes a plot this size work: the accommodation goes upwards and the garden stays yours. Downstairs there is an open-plan living and dining room opening to the terrace, a fitted kitchen, a bedroom with its own bathroom, a separate WC and a utility room. Three further bedrooms, a second bathroom and another WC are upstairs. The layout can be adapted to suit you.
About Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez
Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez is one of the larger communes of the Vendée coast, and one of the most varied. It has fourteen kilometres of shoreline that changes character as you follow it: the long open beaches of the north around Les Demoiselles and Les Mouettes, the sheltered coves of La Pège, and then the Corniche Vendéenne — a low rocky coast of blowholes, arches and ledges, with the strange sculpted rocks of the Cinq Pineaux standing offshore. The coast path runs along the top of it and the sunsets from there are the ones people photograph.
Sion-sur-l'Océan, the old seaside village on the corniche, has restaurants and cafés looking straight out to sea. The main town inland has supermarkets, schools, doctors, a market and everything needed for the year round. Behind it lie the marshes and the bourrines — the low reed-thatched cottages of the old marsh dwellers, several of which are open as museums.
Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, immediately south across the Vie estuary, is a working fishing port famous for its sardines, with a marina, a lively centre and a railway station connecting to Nantes and on to Paris. Saint-Jean-de-Monts is fifteen minutes north, La Roche-sur-Yon around forty minutes inland, and Nantes and its international airport a little over an hour.
