About Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët
Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët is a bustling town of around 5,800 people in the Manche, sitting at the meeting point of three historic regions — Normandy, Brittany, and the old Pays de la Loire. It has been a place of importance for over a thousand years: fortified by Charles the Simple in 911, and later chosen by William the Conqueror as a strategic stronghold, with a medieval tower in the town centre surviving from those days. Today it is best known for its enormous Wednesday market, one of the largest and liveliest in the whole region, drawing shoppers from miles around.
For everyday life, the town has an excellent range of shops, supermarkets, schools, and medical services — genuinely everything you need close to hand, which is not always the case in rural France. The surrounding countryside is classic southern Normandy: gentle, green, and dotted with the orchards that give the region its famous cider and Calvados.
The location is superb for getting about. Mont-Saint-Michel — one of the wonders of the world — is around 35 km away, an easy day out. Avranches, overlooking the great bay, and the medieval town of Fougères in neighbouring Brittany are both around half an hour off. Saint-Malo, with its direct ferry crossings to the UK, is roughly 80 km away, Rennes and its international airport a similar distance, and the ferry port of Caen is within comfortable reach.
