About Saint-Cyr-des-Gâts
Saint-Cyr-des-Gâts is a small commune in the south of the Vendée, in the bocage country between Fontenay-le-Comte and La Châtaigneraie. The name comes from the old word for uncleared woodland, and the landscape still shows it — hedgerows, oak copses, small fields and lanes that wander.
It is genuinely rural and genuinely quiet, with a village centre, a church and a community that is here in February. La Châtaigneraie and Sainte-Hermine are each a short drive for supermarkets, schools, doctors and markets.
Fontenay-le-Comte is around twenty minutes: a Ville d'Art et d'Histoire, once the capital of the Bas-Poitou, with a Renaissance quarter, the Fontaine des Quatre-Tias, and the forest of Mervent-Vouvant beyond it — the largest forest in the Vendée, with its lake, its gorges and the fortified village of Vouvant on its edge.
The Marais Poitevin and its green canals are half an hour south. La Roche-sur-Yon is forty-five minutes, Puy du Fou around fifty, Niort and its TGV to Paris under an hour, and the Atlantic beaches at Les Sables-d'Olonne about an hour and a quarter.
