About Saint-Brice-de-Landelles
Saint-Brice-de-Landelles lies in the far south of the Manche, in the deep bocage where Normandy meets Brittany. This is old, settled farming country — small fields, high hedges, orchards, sunken lanes, grey stone farms — and it is about as peaceful as France gets while still being ten minutes from a supermarket.
Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët is the local town, a lively market town of around 5,800 people with supermarkets, schools, doctors, restaurants and a weekly market, and it is a short drive away. Louvigné-du-Désert lies just over the Breton border to the south.
The Sélune valley runs through this corner, and the removal of its two old dams has opened up one of the largest river restoration projects in Europe — the salmon are returning and a long new stretch of valley walking has come with it. The greenways along the old railway lines give miles of traffic-free cycling through the bocage.
Mont-Saint-Michel is around thirty-five minutes. Fougères, with one of the largest medieval castles in Europe, is twenty-five minutes into Brittany. Avranches is about half an hour, Rennes with its airport and TGV to Paris around an hour, and Saint-Malo and its ferries an hour and ten minutes.
