About Neulliac

Neulliac sits just north of Pontivy in central Morbihan, in the valley country above the Blavet. It is a commune of a little under a thousand people with everyday shops, and its real advantage is simple: it is close enough to Pontivy that you get a town's services with a village's prices and quiet.

Pontivy, ten minutes away, is one of the most useful towns in inland Brittany. It has a hospital, several supermarkets, a proper high street, a large Monday market, cinemas, sports facilities, primary schools, colleges and lycées. Its history shows in two layers: the medieval town around the Rohan château, and beside it the straight streets and stone façades of the quarter Napoleon laid out when he made it a garrison town and briefly renamed it Napoléonville.

The Blavet runs through, canalised, and the towpath south from Pontivy towards Hennebont is one of the loveliest stretches of waterway in Brittany — past Saint-Nicolas-des-Eaux, the chapel of Saint-Gildas built against its rock, and the great bend of the river at Castennec.

Lorient and the south coast are around fifty minutes, the north coast at Saint-Brieuc about the same, Vannes an hour, and Rennes roughly an hour and a quarter.
