About Moulines
Moulines is a scattered rural commune in the south of the Manche, close to the Mayenne and the Ille-et-Vilaine, and it is about as quiet as France gets while remaining a short drive from a supermarket.
This is cider and dairy country. The farms around still press their own apples and distil their own calvados, the hedgerows are old and thick, and the lanes go nowhere in particular — which is the point. For anyone leaving a town behind, the difference at night is the thing people remark on first.
Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët, a few minutes away, provides the practical side: schooling at both levels, supermarkets, doctors, a pharmacy, a pool, restaurants and a weekly market. Louvigné-du-Désert and Fougères are just over the Breton border to the south, and Fougères has a full range of shops and an enormous medieval castle.
The walking and cycling are first-rate, with waymarked paths through the bocage and voies vertes along the old railways, and the rivers hold trout and salmon.
Mont-Saint-Michel is around thirty-five minutes, Fougères twenty-five, Avranches half an hour, Rennes with its airport and TGV roughly an hour, and Saint-Malo and its ferries about an hour and a quarter.
