About living in Mortain
What sets Mortain apart from most small Norman towns is that it has genuine drama on its doorstep and a full set of services in its centre.
The town stands on a granite shoulder above the Cance, and a short walk from the shops takes you into a wooded gorge with a twenty-five-metre waterfall at the top of it. Above that stands the Abbaye Blanche, founded in the twelfth century, its cloister still standing. From the little chapel on the ridge the view runs west across the bocage to the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel.
Day to day, there are supermarkets, a primary school and a collège, doctors, a dentist, a pharmacy, a library, restaurants and a weekly market — enough that a family can live here without a long drive for every errand. Sourdeval is ten minutes for a cinema and more shops, Vire and Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët around twenty for secondary schooling and a wider range.
This is also some of the best walking, cycling and fishing country in Normandy. The Sée and the Sélune run either side, both good salmon and trout rivers, and the disused railways have become traffic-free greenways.
Avranches and the bay are around half an hour, Mont-Saint-Michel about forty minutes, Caen and its ferries an hour, Saint-Malo an hour and a quarter, and Rennes with its airport and TGV a little over an hour.
