About Mortain-Bocage
Mortain is the most dramatic small town in the Manche, and most people who visit it are surprised it is not better known. It stands on a steep granite shoulder above the valley of the Cance, and the whole town is built around water and rock.
The two waterfalls are its signature. The Grande Cascade drops around twenty-five metres through a wooded gorge a few minutes' walk from the centre, and the Petite Cascade sits just downstream — both reached on footpaths through the trees, both running hard after rain. Above them stands the Abbaye Blanche, a twelfth-century Cistercian abbey with a remarkably intact cloister, and from the Petite Chapelle on the ridge the view runs for miles across the bocage to Mont-Saint-Michel on a clear day.
The town itself has supermarkets, a school, doctors, a pharmacy, restaurants and a market, so ordinary life works here. It is part of the enlarged commune of Mortain-Bocage, in the heart of walking, cycling and fishing country, with the Sée and the Sélune valleys either side.
Sourdeval is around ten minutes, Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët about twenty, and Avranches and the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel roughly half an hour. Saint-Malo and its ferries are about an hour and a quarter, Caen around an hour, and Rennes with its airport and TGV a little over an hour.
