About Montournais
Montournais sits in the Haut-Bocage Vendéen, the hilly northern corner of the department where the land rises into what the French call the Collines Vendéennes — a spine of low granite hills running across the top of the Vendée, quite unlike the flat plain and marsh further south.
This is walking country, and good walking country. The valley of the Sèvre Nantaise runs nearby, deep and wooded, with old mills along it. The lake at Rochereau, a reservoir of some two hundred hectares, is a few minutes away for fishing, sailing and paths around the water. Higher up, the Mont Mercure — the highest point in the Vendée at 285 metres, with a church tower on the summit you can climb — gives a view over five departments on a clear day.
The village has a bakery, shops, a school and a community. Pouzauges, a medieval hilltop town and a Petite Cité de Caractère with supermarkets, schools, a cinema and an aquatic centre, is ten minutes away. La Châtaigneraie is twenty minutes south.
The Puy du Fou — the most visited attraction in France after Disneyland — is around twenty minutes north. Cholet is half an hour, Nantes about an hour and a quarter, La Roche-sur-Yon fifty minutes, and the Atlantic beaches at Les Sables-d'Olonne roughly an hour and a half.
