About Petosse
Petosse is a village in the southern Vendée, a few minutes north-east of Fontenay-le-Comte, where the low limestone plain begins to give way to the bocage. It is quiet, agricultural and unshowy — which is exactly why land here costs what it does.
The commune sits on the old Roman road and has been farmed for a very long time; the country around is arable and vine, with long views and the big skies that this part of the Vendée does so well.
Fontenay-le-Comte, ten minutes away, is the town that makes the position work. A Ville d'Art et d'Histoire and once the capital of the Bas-Poitou, it has a Renaissance quarter, the Fontaine des Quatre-Tias, a château, supermarkets, schools, a hospital and a Saturday market that fills the centre. Rabelais studied there.
Behind the town rises the forest of Mervent-Vouvant, five thousand hectares of oak and beech over a gorge and a lake, with walking, climbing, canoeing and the fortified village of Vouvant on its edge — one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France.
South, the Marais Poitevin begins within twenty minutes: the green canals under the poplars, the punts, the flat cycling on the dykes and the enormous skies. Niort and its TGV to Paris are around forty minutes, La Rochelle an hour, and the Atlantic beaches about fifty minutes.
