Here is a brand new 4-bedroom family house in one of the most characterful towns in the whole of the Vendée — Pouzauges, the historic "Queen of the Bocage", set high on its hilltop with views that stretch for miles. With two bathrooms, a ground-floor bedroom, and flexible living over two levels, it's built for family life, for summers full of visitors, or for anyone who wants a brand new home in a town with genuine soul and everything on the doorstep.
Downstairs, a bright open-plan living and dining room opens to the garden, with a modern kitchen and a ground-floor bedroom served by its own bathroom — ideal for guests, or for anyone who prefers to avoid the stairs. Upstairs there are three further bedrooms, a second bathroom, and flexible space to use however you wish. The whole layout can be adapted to suit you.
About Pouzauges
Pouzauges is a medieval hilltop town of real character, perched at one of the highest points in the Vendée on a rocky spur that has drawn settlers since Gallo-Roman times. Its name means "viewpoint on a hill", and it more than lives up to it — the great 13th-century castle keep, once home to Catherine de Thouars and her notorious husband Gilles de Rais, still rises above the town, offering panoramas across the bocage and beyond. A designated Petite Cité de Caractère and a labelled Station Verte, Pouzauges has flowered pedestrian lanes, a beautiful Romanesque church with rare 13th-century frescoes, and, remarkably, the distinction of having been the first electrified town in all of western France back in 1887.
For everyday life, this is a proper little town: shops, supermarkets, schools, medical facilities, an aquatic centre, a cinema, a theatre, and weekly markets. The surrounding Pays de Pouzauges offers more than 60 signposted walking trails through 1,500 hectares of woods, rivers, and hilltop viewpoints, including the famous windmills on the Bois de la Folie.
The wider area is a delight. The Puy du Fou — the most visited attraction in France after Disneyland, and repeatedly voted the world's finest theme park — is just 17 km away. Les Sables-d'Olonne and its Atlantic beaches are around an hour and a half by road, or reachable directly by train from Pouzauges' own station. La Roche-sur-Yon is 50 km to the west, with Cholet and Nantes within comfortable driving distance to the north.
