About La Vicomté-sur-Rance

La Vicomté is a small commune on the western bank of the Rance, just downstream of Dinan, and it is one of the prettiest stretches of the whole river.

The water here is still tidal but narrowing towards the lock at Le Châtelier, where the estuary becomes the canalised river that runs up to Dinan and on across Brittany to the Ille-et-Rance canal and Saint-Malo the long way round. The towpath runs the entire length — flat, traffic-free walking and cycling through woods and along the water, past locks, lock-keepers' cottages and moorings.

The commune has a small harbour, a slipway and quiet green banks, and the GR34 coast path follows the river. There are shops, a bakery and a school in the village, with everything larger a few minutes away.

Dinan is ten minutes: a walled medieval town with almost three kilometres of ramparts, half-timbered streets running down the Rue du Jerzual to a port on the river, and a full range of shops, schools, doctors and a hospital.

Saint-Malo is twenty-five to thirty minutes, with the walled city, the beaches, the ferry port to Portsmouth, Poole and Jersey, and the TGV to Paris in under three hours. Dinard and its airport are twenty minutes; Rennes around fifty.
