About La Gouesnière and the polder country
La Gouesnière sits in the flat, fertile country between Saint-Malo and Dol-de-Bretagne, and it is one of the few villages near the city with a railway station of its own. La Gouesnière–Cancale is on the Rennes–Saint-Malo line: a few minutes into the city, under an hour to Rennes, and from Saint-Malo the TGV reaches Paris in under three hours. For a family with a commuter or teenagers, that changes what daily life looks like.
The village has a bakery, shops, a school and a real community, and the Château de Bonaban — an eighteenth-century house in its own park, now a hotel — sits at the edge of the commune.
The country around is the marais of the Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel: reclaimed polder, market gardens and long open horizons, some of the most productive farmland in France and the source of the early vegetables this corner is known for. The light over it in the evening is remarkable, and Mont-Saint-Michel itself stands on the skyline from the roads to the east.
Saint-Malo is ten minutes, with the hospital, the secondary schools, the supermarkets, the walled city and the ferry port to Portsmouth, Poole and Jersey. Cancale and its oyster beds are ten minutes north; Dol-de-Bretagne and its cathedral fifteen south; Dinard and its airport half an hour; Mont-Saint-Michel about forty minutes.
