About La Gouesnière
La Gouesnière is a village in the countryside behind Saint-Malo, between the city and Dol-de-Bretagne, and its great practical asset is the railway. The station at La Gouesnière–Cancale is on the Rennes–Saint-Malo line, so you can be in the city in a few minutes or in Rennes in under an hour without a car — and from Saint-Malo the TGV runs to Paris in under three hours.
The village itself has a bakery, shops, a school and a community, with the Château de Bonaban — an eighteenth-century house now run as a hotel — in its park at the edge of the commune.
Around it is the marais and the polder country of the Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel: flat, open, extraordinarily fertile, famous for its early vegetables, with long views and huge skies. Mont-Saint-Michel itself stands on the horizon from the roads east of here and is around forty minutes away.
Saint-Malo is ten minutes: the hospital, the secondary schools, the supermarkets, the walled city, the ferry port to Portsmouth, Poole and Jersey. Cancale and its oyster beds are ten minutes north, Dol-de-Bretagne and its cathedral fifteen minutes south, Dinard and its airport half an hour, Rennes under an hour.
