About Châteauneuf-d'Ille-et-Vilaine

Châteauneuf sits on the ridge between the Rance and the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, a quarter of an hour inland of Saint-Malo, and it takes its name from the fortress that once guarded the road.

The Château de Châteauneuf was one of the strongholds of the region, dismantled in the seventeenth century on Richelieu's orders; what survives of it stands above the village as a reminder of how contested this ground once was. The village below has shops, a bakery, a school and a community that is here all year.

The setting is the marais country — the reclaimed flats and market gardens of the bay, hugely fertile, with long views and enormous skies. The Rance valley is a few minutes west, with the wooded banks, the moorings and the towpath.

The N137 and the main roads run close, which is what makes the position work: Saint-Malo fifteen minutes, Dinan twenty, Dol-de-Bretagne ten, Rennes around fifty.

Saint-Malo gives you the hospital, the secondary schools, the supermarkets, the walled city, the beaches, and the ferry port to Portsmouth, Poole and Jersey, with a TGV to Paris in under three hours. Mont-Saint-Michel is about forty-five minutes; Dinard and its airport twenty-five.
