About Les Rimains and Cancale

Les Rimains sits on the slope above La Houle, the old fishing port, looking out across the Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel. It is the quarter where the villas are, on the coast path between the port and the Pointe du Grouin, and the walk into town drops you straight onto the quay.

Cancale itself is the oyster capital of France. The bay below holds hundreds of hectares of beds, uncovered twice a day by some of the greatest tides in Europe, and at the Pointe des Crolles the market sells them by the dozen to be eaten on the sea wall. It is a working commune of around five thousand with schools, supermarkets, doctors and a market, not a resort that closes in October.

The coast path north from here is the best section of the whole GR34: cliffs, gorse and heather round the Pointe du Grouin, the Île des Landes bird reserve offshore, the beaches at Port-Mer and Port-Pican below. South, the bay opens out and Mont-Saint-Michel stands on the horizon.

Saint-Malo is fifteen minutes west — hospital, walled city, ferry port, and a TGV to Paris in under three hours. Mont-Saint-Michel is forty minutes, Dinard and its airport half an hour, Rennes an hour.
