About living in Cancale
Most people know Cancale for one afternoon: oysters on the sea wall at the Pointe des Crolles, shells thrown onto the beach, the bay stretching away towards Mont-Saint-Michel. Living here is a different and better thing.
It is a working commune of around five thousand people, with a real centre — schools, supermarkets, doctors, a pharmacy, restaurants that open in January, and a weekly market. The fishing and oyster trade still employs people; the bay is farmed, not decorative. Out of season the town belongs to the people who live in it.
The bay itself is extraordinary. The tides here are among the greatest in Europe, and the water withdraws across the beds twice a day to leave a working landscape of trestles and tractors. The GR34 runs north from the port round the Pointe du Grouin — cliffs, gorse, the Île des Landes bird reserve offshore, and a view on a clear day as far as the Îles Chausey.
The Route du Vin and the beaches of Port-Mer and Port-Pican lie just north; the long sands of Saint-Coulomb and Le Guesclin a little further west.
Saint-Malo is fifteen minutes, with the hospital, the walled city, the ferry port and the TGV to Paris in under three hours. Mont-Saint-Michel is forty minutes; Dinard and its airport half an hour; Rennes an hour.
