Bourneau is a peaceful village in the canton of La Châtaigneraie, in the southern Vendée — a gently elevated spot in the bocage, with meadows, hedgerows, and quiet lanes stretching in every direction. It's the kind of Vendée village the tourists rarely reach, and all the better for it: genuine, unhurried, and warmly welcoming, in a part of France blessed with some of the best sunshine on the Atlantic side of the country.
Right on the doorstep lies the great Forêt de Mervent-Vouvant, the largest state forest in the Vendée, with its lake, its walking and cycling trails, and its wildlife, wrapping around the storybook hill village of Vouvant — one of the officially designated Plus Beaux Villages de France, famous for its ramparts and the legendary Tour Mélusine. Fontenay-le-Comte, a classified Ville d'Art et d'Histoire with a fine historic centre, excellent shops, schools, and medical services, is just 12 km to the south.
There's a great deal to enjoy nearby. The Marais Poitevin, the "green Venice" of France, is under 30 km away; the Puy du Fou, widely considered the finest theme park in the world, is around 45 minutes to the north; and the Atlantic beaches at Les Sables-d'Olonne and around La Rochelle are under an hour by road. La Rochelle itself, one of the most beautiful ports in France, is around an hour to the south.
