About Cheffois
Cheffois is a village in the Haut-Bocage of the southern Vendée, a few minutes from La Châtaigneraie, and it has something most villages around here do not: water.
The old granite quarries on the edge of the commune have filled to make deep clear lakes, and the largest of them is now a leisure lake with a beach, fishing and walking paths around the water. The stone from here built half the parish churches in the district, and the workings left behind a rock face and a depth of water that make the site genuinely striking rather than merely pleasant.
The village itself keeps a church, a bakery, shops and a school. Around it is the classic bocage of this corner: hedged fields, oak copses, sunken lanes, and the small hills that make the Haut-Bocage feel quite different from the flat Vendée of the coast.
La Châtaigneraie, a few minutes away, is the market town — supermarkets, schools, doctors, a pharmacy, restaurants and a weekly market that fills the square. Fontenay-le-Comte, the Renaissance town that was once capital of the Bas-Poitou, is around twenty-five minutes, with the forest of Mervent-Vouvant beside it.
Puy du Fou is around forty minutes north, the Marais Poitevin forty minutes south, La Roche-sur-Yon fifty minutes west, Niort and its TGV to Paris under an hour, and the Atlantic beaches about an hour and a quarter.
