Fifty metres from the ocean. Not a short drive, not a ten-minute walk — fifty metres. This is the rarest thing on the Vendée coast and the reason this plot is priced as it is: 630 m² of front-line land at Brétignolles-sur-Mer, with a brand new four-bedroom house on it at €528,000 all in.
The house is our four-bedroom design with two bathrooms, over two floors with a garage — and on a plot this close to the sea, the first floor is where the value sits. The ground floor has a bright open-plan living and dining room opening onto the terrace and garden, a fitted kitchen, a bedroom with its own bathroom, a separate WC and a utility room. Three further bedrooms, a second bathroom and another WC are upstairs. The layout can be adapted to suit you, and the house can be oriented and the openings placed to make the most of the aspect.
About Brétignolles-sur-Mer
Brétignolles is where the Vendée coast turns from flat sand and pine forest into something wilder. Its beaches — La Sauzaie, Les Dunes, La Normandelière, Marais Girard — are the ones Atlantic surfers come for, and La Sauzaie in particular is one of the best-known reef breaks in France, worked hard by surfers from October through to the spring.
Between the beaches the coast is low rock and dune, with the coast path running along it past little coves and the old fishermen's huts on their winches. Inland, the commune keeps its village character: a church, a centre with shops and restaurants, a market, and the Parc de Californie and its lake behind the dunes. It is a proper seaside village of a few thousand people that swells in summer and settles back down afterwards.
Brem-sur-Mer and its vineyards are a few minutes south, Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and its fishing port fifteen minutes north, and Les Sables-d'Olonne — the great resort of the Vendée, and the start and finish of the Vendée Globe — around twenty-five minutes down the coast. Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie has the nearest railway station, La Roche-sur-Yon is around forty minutes inland, and Nantes and its international airport a little over an hour.
