About Auchay-sur-Vendée

Auchay-sur-Vendée is a young commune with old bones — formed in 2016 from the villages of Auzay and Chaix, on the river Vendée just downstream of Fontenay-le-Comte, where the last of the bocage runs down into the marsh.

That position is unusually good. Fontenay-le-Comte is a few minutes away: a Ville d'Art et d'Histoire, once the capital of the Bas-Poitou, with a Renaissance quarter, the Fontaine des Quatre-Tias, a full range of shops, supermarkets, schools, a hospital and a Saturday market. Rabelais lived and studied there.

Behind the town rises the forest of Mervent-Vouvant, the largest in the Vendée — five thousand hectares of oak and beech over a gorge and a lake, with walking, climbing, a zoo and the fortified village of Vouvant on its edge, one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France.

South, the Marais Poitevin begins within a few kilometres: the green canals under the poplars, the punts, the flat cycling on the dykes, the herons and the enormous skies.
