About Lanvénégen
Lanvénégen sits at the north-western edge of the Morbihan, on the border with Finistère and within the Pays du Roi Morvan. This is the quieter, greener, more wooded half of the department — a landscape of hedgerows, granite and river valleys rather than the busy coast, and priced accordingly.
The commune lies above the valley of the Ellé, one of the best salmon and sea-trout rivers in Brittany and a fine stretch of water for walking and canoeing. Le Faouët, eight kilometres away, is the market town for this corner: it has one of the most remarkable sights in inland Brittany, a vast sixteenth-century covered market hall still in use on market day, and just outside the town the chapels of Sainte-Barbe, set dramatically into a wooded hillside above the river, and Saint-Fiacre, with a rood screen considered among the finest in France.
For everyday life, Quimperlé is around twenty minutes south, with a full range of shops, a hospital and a railway station on the Quimper–Lorient–Nantes line. Lorient is about forty minutes, and Lorient Bretagne Sud airport with it. The beaches of Le Pouldu, Guidel and Clohars-Carnoët are around half an hour, which is the appeal of this area in one line: forest-and-river prices, with the Atlantic close enough for an afternoon.
It is a real working commune rather than a holiday village, which means neighbours in February, a school run and a boulangerie that opens all year.
