About Guémené-sur-Scorff

Guémené-sur-Scorff is a medieval citadel in the valley of the River Scorff, a town continuously inhabited and prosperous since around the year 1050. In 1570 it was raised to a principality under the powerful Rohan-Guémené family, and the heritage they left behind is visible at every turn: half-timbered houses from the fifteenth century, the covered market of 1634, ancient washhouses, and the remarkable remains of the Rohan castle, including the extraordinary Bains de la Reine, one of the last and best-preserved noble bathing houses in France.

The town is known throughout France for its andouille, celebrated every August at the Fête de l'Andouille, when a usual population of around 1,200 swells to some 30,000 visitors. The valley of the Scorff is a nature reserve of exceptional quality, with otters, salmon and trout in its clear waters and miles of beautiful riverside walking. Everyday amenities, shops, restaurants and services are all here on the doorstep.

Pontivy, with its medieval castle, Napoleonic quarter and full range of shops, schools and medical facilities, is 17 km to the east. Lac de Guerlédan, Brittany's largest lake, is 18 km away. Lorient, with its airport offering direct flights to Ireland, is around 40 km to the south, and the coastline of southern Morbihan and the beaches of the Quiberon peninsula are within easy reach.
