About Gueltas
Gueltas is a small commune in central Morbihan, in the countryside between Pontivy and Josselin, and it belongs to a part of Brittany that most British buyers drive through on the way to the coast without realising how well it works as a place to live.
The Nantes–Brest canal runs a few kilometres away through Rohan, and the towpath is the great unsung asset of central Brittany: flat, traffic-free walking and cycling for as far as you care to go, past locks and lock-keepers' cottages, with the option of hiring a boat for a week without a licence.
Pontivy, about twenty minutes west, is the town that makes this area practical. It has a hospital, supermarkets, a proper high street, schools and lycées, a Wednesday market that fills the centre, and Napoleon's planned quarter of straight streets and stone façades laid out beside the medieval town and its Rohan castle. Josselin, about the same distance the other way, is one of the loveliest small towns in Brittany, with its château above the canal.
Vannes and the Gulf of Morbihan are an hour south, the north coast about the same distance up, and Rennes around an hour and a quarter. Being in the middle of Brittany is the point: nothing is very far.
