About Les Sables-d'Olonne

Les Sables-d'Olonne is the Vendée's great seaside town, and unlike most of this coast it is a real town first and a resort second — around 45,000 people, a working fishing port, a year-round centre and a full range of services.

The Grande Plage is the picture everyone knows: a long curve of fine sand with the Remblai promenade running behind it, backed by cafés and restaurants. Behind that sits the old quarter of La Chaume across the channel, reached by the little passenger ferry, with its fort, its lighthouse and its narrow fishermen's streets. There is a large marina, a thalassotherapy spa, a casino, a covered market, a zoo, and the Abbaye Sainte-Croix museum.

Every four years the town fills for the start of the Vendée Globe, the solo non-stop round-the-world race that leaves from and returns to this harbour, and for a few weeks the pontoons are one of the great sights in world sailing. The rest of the time the port lands sardines, sole and langoustines, and the fish market sells them a few hours later.

For everyday life there are supermarkets, schools, a hospital, doctors and everything else a town this size carries. The railway station has direct services to Nantes and on to Paris. La Roche-sur-Yon is around thirty-five minutes inland, and Nantes and its international airport an hour and a half.
